Born in Paris, the son of a watchmaker, Pierre-Augustin-Caron de Beaumarchais began his career as a music teacher to the daughter of King louis XV. In 1756, he married and took the name of the widow of a court official and was subsequently ennobled himself. He then served as an official under Kings Louis XV and Louis XVI and was sent on a trade mission in 1764 to Madrid by Joseph Paris. Beaumarchais's literary fame comes from his two comedies, Le Barbier de Seville (1775) and Le Mariage de Figaro (1784). In both, he satirized the French aristocracy and expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling classes in the years before the revolution. The plays would be made into popular operas, Le nozze di Figaro (1786) by Mozart, and Il barbiere di Siviglia (1816) by Rossini. Beaumarchais's earlier works include Eugénie ou la Vertu de désespoir (1767) and Les deux Amis ou le Négotiant de Lyon (1770).
